Do You Suspect Your Roof Contains Asbestos?

Buildings built before 1990 in New Zealand have a medium – high likelihood of containing asbestos. With so many different places in a residential building that could contain asbestos, from old Decramastic Tile or Super Six Roofs, Hardies Asbestos Cladding, Soffits, Insulation, Popcorn Ceilings/Texture Ceilings & much more it is unlikely that a building is completely asbestos free.

This picture from Worksafe NZ explains in a easily understandable way the different locations of asbestos in a residential home.

What Should I Do If I Think My Roof Contains Asbestos?

If the roof has not suffered recent damage the best thing to do is contact an asbestos management professional for advice! We will come out and provide advice and insight on the roof. It’s not worth the risk to yourself, your family, and your community for you to try moving or inspecting the roof as this heightens the chance that airborne asbestos particles which are highly dangerous will be released into your home or building.

Types of Asbestos Roofs

There are 4 main types of asbestos roofs – Decramastic Tile, Super Six (Residential), Super Six (Commercial) and Asbestos Shingle Roofs which present their own dangers & require different types of exprtise to deal with them. Read below to find our more about these roofs!

Decramastic Tile Roofs

Decramastic Tiles are scallop-shaped metal tiles also known by other names such as pressed metal tiles, Decrabond, and ‘stone chip roofs’. Decramastic Tile roofs were manufactured and widely used in New Zealand during the 1970s and 1980s. Due to the presence of asbestos, Decramastic Tiles are no longer manufactured and have been replaced by other types of metal tiles. There are still many original Decramastic Tile roofs on properties in New Zealand but as they are particularly vulnerable to deterioration over time, and with new laws in NZ regarding asbestos, there has been a boom in the maintenance and replacement of these in recent years.

Decramastic tile roofs are best replaced with either new metal tile roofs or with a colorsteel longrun roof.

Super Six Roofs

Super Six and Super 8 roofs were once widely used in NZ to provide fire resistant, cost effective roofing for industrial, commercial and residential buildings. Super six was a very very brittle roofing type when it was first released and after years of dealing with NZ weather it has become increasable more so, meaning we 100% advise any person who has a super six roof to be cautious of breaking the sheets.

Super six can be easily replaced with colorsteel roofing as it follows the same general construction method.
