Found damaged asbestos? Don’t disturb it.
Call us for advice and an assessment. Here’s what to do right now to keep everyone safe.
What to do if you find or disturb asbestos
Based on WorkSafe New Zealand’s advice for homeowners.
- 1
Stop what you are doing
Disturbing asbestos further releases more fibres. Tell others in the area and keep people and pets out.
- 2
Minimise the spread
Leave the area and close doors and windows to seal it off. Wipe yourself down with damp rags – don’t brush yourself off.
- 3
Remove contaminated clothing
Take off your top layer, turning it inside out, without shaking it. Double-bag clothes and rags and seal them with tape.
- 4
Don’t sweep, vacuum or hose
Household vacuums and sweeping spread fibres. Never water-blast or hose broken asbestos.
- 5
Call a reputable asbestos contractor
We’ll advise you over the phone, assess the site and safely clean up and dispose of the material.
- 6
See your GP if you were exposed
Asbestos-related illness takes many years to develop. Mention any exposure at your next GP appointment.
