Removal & disposal

Asbestos Cladding Removal Auckland

Asbestos cement cladding – flat or textured fibre-cement sheets, 'Hardies' panels, soffits, louvre blades and side flashings – was common on New Zealand homes and commercial buildings until the 1980s. JP Franklin removes it safely, panel by panel, without breaking the sheets, wraps and disposes of the waste at a licensed facility, and can fit new cladding, soffits or linings afterwards.

Exterior asbestos removal

Through our exterior services, all asbestos is removed by highly trained staff fitted with industry-grade respiratory and safety equipment. The area of concern is isolated and enclosed away from you and your family, the removed materials are bagged and disposed of at a certified hazardous-waste site, and the area is thoroughly cleaned afterwards so you can breathe easily again. The whole procedure is carried out to release as few fibres and as little dust as possible.

Where we find asbestos on the outside of buildings

  • Fibre-cement wall sheets and cladding (including Hardies and Duroc panels)
  • Eaves and soffits
  • Louvre blades
  • Side flashings
  • Cement downpipes and spouting components
  • Water tanks
  • Pipe insulation

Signs your cladding needs attention

Cracked or broken panels, crumbling edges, water damage behind the cladding, and planned work such as new windows, doors or an extension are all reasons to have the cladding tested and assessed. Asbestos cladding in good condition can sometimes be left or encapsulated, but damaged cladding should be removed by professionals.

Full remediation

We’re able to fully remediate anything we remove from your site. Once the asbestos cladding is gone, our team can install new weatherboards, fibre-cement or metal cladding, and new soffits – so your building is finished, not just stripped.

FAQ

Asbestos Cladding Removal: common questions

Can’t see your question? Call us or send a message – we’re happy to help.

How do I know if my cladding contains asbestos?

Flat or textured fibre-cement cladding on a building constructed or altered before 2000 may contain asbestos. It looks identical to non-asbestos fibre cement, so a sample must be tested by a laboratory.

Can I paint over asbestos cladding?

Sound asbestos cladding can be encapsulated with a suitable paint system, but it must not be sanded or water-blasted during preparation. Cracked or crumbling cladding should be removed.

Do I need to remove asbestos cladding before renovating?

If your renovation will drill, cut or remove the cladding – for example new windows, doors or an extension – the asbestos must be dealt with first by a licensed removalist when more than 10 m² is involved.
