Asbestos in central Auckland homes and buildings
Central Auckland has some of the city’s oldest housing stock. Early 1900s villas and bungalows were usually built from native timber, but most have been extended or renovated since – and the lean-tos, sunrooms, bathrooms and garages added between the 1950s and the late 1990s are where asbestos is most often found: fibre-cement wall linings, textured ceilings, vinyl flooring and Super Six roofing.
Post-war suburbs such as Ellerslie, One Tree Hill, Hillsborough and Avondale have large numbers of 1950s–70s homes, many with Decramastic tile roofs or asbestos cement cladding. Further east and south, Penrose and Mount Wellington have warehouses and factories with large Super Six roofs that are now reaching the end of their lives.
