Does your garage have asbestos?
Was your garage built before 1999? If so, it may have been constructed with materials that contain asbestos. Asbestos had a wide range of applications, but in garages and sheds it was most commonly used as roofing (Super Six) and as insulation and wall cladding.
Intact asbestos sheets are more of a nuisance than an immediate threat – but once a sheet cracks or breaks, you and your family can be exposed to microscopic airborne fibres every time you use the space.
How we remove asbestos garages and sheds
Sheds are structures most homeowners forget about – they’re the last thing to be maintained, and often end up full of storage. Our process:
- Test the roofing and wall linings to confirm what’s there.
- Clear and isolate the area, and keep people and pets away.
- Wet down the sheets to suppress dust and unfasten them so they come off whole.
- Wrap and label every sheet and piece of debris in heavy-duty plastic.
- Demolish the remaining framing if you’re removing the whole structure.
- Clean up the site, including any broken pieces in the soil.
- Dispose of the waste at a licensed facility and give you the dockets.
Re-roof instead of removing
If the garage itself is sound, the most cost-effective option is often to remove only the asbestos roof and install a new Colorsteel roof. As roofers, we do both in the same visit.
