Removal & disposal

Interior Asbestos Removal – Ceilings, Floors & Linings

Inside buildings, asbestos is most often found in textured "popcorn" ceilings, vinyl floor tiles and sheet flooring, wet-area linings, wall sheets, hot-water-cupboard linings and pipe lagging. Interior removal is carried out inside an isolated, sealed work area – vents, floors, furniture and heat ducts are covered – so fibres don't spread through the rest of the building.

Interior asbestos removal done properly

Through our interior services, all asbestos is removed by highly trained staff fitted with industry-grade respiratory and safety equipment. The area of concern is isolated and enclosed away from you and your family – all vents, flooring, furniture, air conditioning and heat ducts are covered. Removed materials are bagged and disposed of at a certified hazardous-waste site, and the area is thoroughly cleaned so you can breathe easily again.

Where we find asbestos inside buildings

  • Textured “popcorn” ceilings and some older ceiling tiles, added for fire resistance
  • Vinyl floor tiles, sheet vinyl and linoleum backing
  • Wall sheets and partition walls
  • Wet-area lining substrates behind bathroom and laundry finishes
  • Hot-water-cupboard linings, bath panels and toilet cisterns
  • Fireplace surrounds and insulation board
  • Pipe and boiler lagging, gaskets and seals
  • Electrical meter boards

Friable vs non-friable

Friable asbestos – crumbly or powdery material such as some textured ceilings and pipe lagging – releases fibres easily and can only be removed by a Class A licence holder, with an independent licensed asbestos assessor providing air monitoring and a clearance certificate. Non-friable materials like vinyl tiles and wall sheets are lower risk but still need careful, controlled removal.

FAQ

Interior Asbestos Removal: common questions

Can’t see your question? Call us or send a message – we’re happy to help.

Do popcorn ceilings contain asbestos?

Many textured or "popcorn" ceilings applied in New Zealand before the mid-1980s contain asbestos. Some are friable, which means removal requires a Class A licence. Test before you scrape, sand or paint.

Can I lay new flooring over asbestos vinyl?

Covering intact asbestos vinyl is sometimes possible, but sanding, grinding or lifting it releases fibres. If the floor is damaged or must come up for your renovation, it should be removed by professionals.

Do I need to move out during interior asbestos removal?

For friable removals and larger interior jobs you may need to stay away from the property until clearance is given. We'll explain exactly what's needed in your removal plan.
